UNESCO’s ‘Trash Hacks’, which features ideas from all over the world to inspire others to reduce waste, and help keep the planet greener, now have an entry from Bahrain.

Hussein Waheed’s cute little video on composting, which has helped his family reduce their waste by half and produce vegetables and fruits, is inspiring to its core.

Trash Hack, according to UNESCO, is a guide for teachers to engage their students to trashhack their classrooms, schools, communities and homes. Over 11,500 educational institutions in over 180 countries are part of this unique network, established in 1953.

The peppy video begins with little Waheed describing how he and his family reduced domestic waste by opting for recycling and composting.

The step-by-step video goes well into the details of composting, what is needed, how is it done, and its benefits.

Waheed utilises eggshells, used coffee grounds from local coffee shops and home, green leaves, flowers, dry from his garden, nutshells, kitchen scraps, leftover fruits and vegetables for preparing compost.

He also created a composting bin out of reused materials. A tap is added at the bottom to drain the excess water from the pile. The materials, as shown in the picture given here, are placed in layers in the bin.

Waheed then left it untouched for a few months for the microbes to do their magic.

As the compost got ready, Waheed also shows a do-it-yourself method to determine the Ph, percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in the soil.

He assures that lessening the amount of garbage thrown around is one of the most prime benefits of composting.

It is better to ask what not is there in that green world. As the 2.59 minute long video comes to an end, he once again assures us with a cute little inspiring smile about the benefits of composting. It “reduces the need for chemical fertilisers,” he says before signing off.

“When we started composting at home, our garbage became half of what it was earlier,” he says in the video. Besides, there are other benefits too, he adds, like converting wastes into something usable.

Waheed’s magical video doesn’t end here. The kiddo has also made good use of the materials he produced, as he believes not just in preaching but in putting it into practice.

As the camera pans into the terrace of his home, Waheed unveils to viewers a whole new magical green world.

The video comes to a close displaying a quote from Dr Seuss, The Lorax. “Unless someone likes you care a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.

It’s not.” For all of you, who haven’t watched it yet, give it a try. It’s worth it. The video is there on the home page of the UNESCO website. Or let us make it easy. Use this link: https://youtu. be/X--KAI5-xcY It will take you straight to the video. Enjoy trash hacking!
