Highly productive breeds of cows, sheep and goats owned by the Livestock agency are up for sale at Al Hamla Station, said a top Works Ministry official.

Dr Khalid Ahmed Mohammed Hassan, the Undersecretary for Animal Resources at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, said the animals up for auction are purebred. Purebreds, also called purebreeds, are cultivated varieties or cultivars of an animal species, achieved through selective breeding. “This comes out of our responsibility to supporting breeders to improve and increase their production,” Dr Hassan said. The auction aims at providing breeders in the Kingdom with pure breeds having high production characteristics.

He called on the breeders to make the best use of this opportunity to ensure a reasonable profit and help Bahrain achieve food security. The authority, he said, is auctioning 260 heads of cattle, which includes world-class breeds of dairy cattle like Holstein Friesian and Jersey, and vaccinated bulls with unique specifications.

Also up for auction at the agency is Awassi, one of the most prevalent sheep breeds in the Arab World. The breed, well-known for its milk-producing potential under harsh conditions, is also characterised by its ability to produce twins. Dr Hassan said its meat is well sought-after by Bahraini and other consumers.

He said the auction also provides an opportunity to own female and homogeneous mating groups with two to three years of age. “Assaf breeds of sheep are only present at the Livestock Agency, which has the unique ability to produce triple twins,” he said. Damascene and Zraibi goats are also available for auction at the agency. The Undersecretary called on breeders to take advantage of this auction and submit their bids through Tenderboard. The tender published on 26 April 2021 will close on 19 May 2021.

The tender calls for an initial bond of BD500 and fees of BD15.
