Jail term cut in pic sacrilege case

The High Criminal Appeals Court yesterday reduced the sentence of a defendant convicted of defaming His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Zainab Al Khawaja was sentenced in December to three years in jail for ripping the photograph of HM the King during a court hearing.

The court upheld her conviction but reduced the sentence from three years to one. However, she will still have to pay a fine of BD3,000 for her crime.

Last year, the Lower Criminal Court sentenced Al Khawaja to one year behind bars for insulting an on-duty policewoman.
