The Corrective Justice Law for Children and their protection from ill-treatment is one of the prominent laws discussed by the Women and Child Affairs Committee of the Shura Council during the third session of the fifth legislative term, said Dr Ebtesam Mohamed Saleh Al Dalal. Dr Al Dalal, the Chairman of the Women and Child Affairs Committee, said the act issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa gives priority to the rights and interests of children in line with the international conventions and treaties signed.

Al-Dalal said the committee held four meetings during the third session to meet officials and civil authorities to examine their views on the draft law.

“During these meetings, the committee considered the objectives of the draft law and emphasised its importance in achieving restorative justice for children during criminal proceedings, investigation, trial and execution of the judgment.” The law also aims to establish Corrective Justice Courts for Children and a Judicial Committee for Childhood.

“It also regulates the penalties or protective measures for the child, which include enrolling him in one of the training and rehabilitation programmes, or national educational programmes, or placing him in a specialised hospital, or one of the social welfare institutions or associations.”

The draft law, Dr Ebtesam Mohamed Saleh Al Dalal said, in its entirety achieves restorative justice for children and protects them from dangers and exposure to physical, psychological, and sexual harm and neglect or economic exploitation.
