Drop in number of work permits for foreigners in Bahrain

The total number of new work permits issued by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) to foreign workers last year went down as compared to the previous year.
Recent statistics by the LMRA show that 535,000 workers got employment last year, down 9.7% to 592,000 over the same period in 2019.
A total of 152,678 Bahrainis were employed during the last quarter of last year, down 0.7% from 153,853 over the same period in 2019. The number of new work permits issued in the last quarter of the year also declined 19.6% reaching 35,030.
About 48.7% of the total work permits issued for the employment category during the last quarter of the year came from small businesses with less than 10 workers.
The statistics also reveal that the average salary of Bahraini citizens in the last quarter of last year was BD545, up 3.2% compared to the previous year, which was BD528.
