He said extremism came on top of the cross-cutting issues that undermine global security and stability. “It’s threatening global peace and security. Its impacts go beyond regional national borders.”

Prince Khalifa pointed out that the international community had to develop more effective mechanisms to meet the aspirations of the world people. “The world is in need for more understanding and interaction between member States of the UN for the common good of the people,” he remarked.

“The UN Day is an occasion to renew the international community’s commitment to the spirit and principles of the Charter of the UN, and draw attention to the urgent need to develop new mechanisms for cooperation,” HRH Premier said.

He commented that the UN had succeeded in establishing an effective international model in the face of many crises and proved its ability to deal with many of the files that had emerged in the aftermath of World War II.

HRH Premier urged the international community to focus more on supporting developing countries and poor communities to achieve sustainable development. He opined that failure of rich countries to extend a helping hand to the needy ones would double the size of human calamities.

Lauding the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the UN, Prince Khalifa said: “The UN efforts must continue to implement the 2015 Development Plan with the same level of enthusiasm and determination to confront poverty.”

He also commented the development achievements of the Kingdom of Bahrain under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, which have helped the Kingdom attain the Millennium Development Goals.
