Kidney transplant surgery held at SMC

Two Bahraini patients with kidney failure got new lease of lives through a successful kidney transplant surgery in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) yesterday.

An experienced Saudi medical team attended the organ transplantation surgery. Relatives of a brain dead patient at the hospital agreed to donate both kidneys for the two kidney patients.

According to SMC’s Head of the Nephrology Department, Dr. Sumaiya Al Ghareeb said the first patient, 23-year-old Bahraini, was undergoing dialysis treatment after a kidney failure two years ago.

“The patient is now recovering well as her body is responding to the new kidney.” The second patient is in his 50s and has been doing dialysis treatment for many years. He is also recuperating after receiving the kidney. Dr. Al Ghareeb explained that Al Moayed treatment unit for kidney transplant received a phone call from Dr. Hassan Al Tublani about the case of a brain dead patient at SMC. Her parents showed their interest to donate her organs even in their grief. So the Saudi medical team was informed. They came to SMC and immediately started the transplant surgery.
