If all the roads in the Kingdom are kept end-to-end in a line, Bahrainis will easily reach Europe by car. The Ministry of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning had paved that much length of roads here in the Kingdom, which is incredible for a country like Bahrain, where the entire length of the main island, which accounts for 78% of the Kingdom’s land area, from north to south is 51 km.
The length of the roads here are also increasing at an impressive rate, with the Works Ministry adding 702 kilometres to it in the past five years.
In 2016, the total length of the paved roads was 3,540 km, and now it is 4,242 kilometres, good enough to drive beyond Austria. In 2019, the ministry added 241 kilometres to the road network here.
Further breaking down, the ministry said it added 573 kilometres to the main roads here, of which this year’s contribution is 19 km, amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Secondary roads were 761 km in 2016 and extended by 121 kilometres each year until April 2021.
The total length of internal and secondary roads were 2,206 in 2016, to which the ministry added 558 kilometres more to reach 2,764 km this year.
Enhancing road infrastructure is crucial to development, the ministry said, adding it is essential for boosting the industrial and commercial sectors and attractive investments.
