Bad roads are to become a thing of the past in Bahrain, as road maintenance, like many other services, is set to enter the digital realm. Works Ministry is on the verge of transforming and managing road maintenance using a Geographic information system or GIS. GIS is said to be one of the tools capable of managing database in road maintenance engineering.

This system could store, manage, analyze, compute and display all forms of geographical data for road maintenance works using software applications.

Experts had pointed out that the adoption of GIS will lead to more capable digital data management, especially for increasing work productivity in managing road maintenance. GIS systems could overlap map and provide an information inquiry facility that can indirectly create a whole new set of information.

Here, data comes as tables, maps, graph, or a combination of all. The Ministry of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Panning said they are planning to share the data thus created with multiple government systems and for internal design and maintenance of road network. A tender launched by the ministry invites proposals for deploying the system in about 12 months.

Suppliers having a valid commercial registration issued by the Ministry of Industry Commerce and Tourism are eligible to make bids. Bids should reach the tender board before the 11th of next month.
