Recently CAF, the London-based Charities Aid Foundation, looked around the world and asked three questions. Had you helped a stranger or someone you didn’t know who needed help? Had you donated money to a charity?

Had you volunteered your time to an organisation? They asked these questions to people from 114 countries around the world, both rich and poor.

When the answers came, Bahrain emerged as a shining example, ahead of all others in the Arab world and several heavyweights in the global scene. The report places Bahrain among the top 10 generous countries, where Indonesia enjoys the top rank.

Overall, the World Giving Index 2021 puts Bahrain in the first spot in the Arab world and 12th globally. To bring that into perspective, know that from the Gulf Cooperation Council, the UAE is at 13th and Saudi Arabia at the 49th spots.

“The global honour reflects the noble Bahraini values of giving, solidarity and cohesion, which has enabled it to overcome many challenges,” said His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM King’s Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs.

HH Shaikh Nasser thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Honorary President of the Royal Humanitarian Foundation, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for the honour.

RHF Secretary-General, Dr Mustafa Al-Sayed, said that 64% of Bahraini people had helped strangers, 51% donated money to charity organisations and needy individuals, and 19% spent some of their time volunteering.

Dr Al-Sayed affirmed that Bahrain has always embraced humanitarian work and helping others culture through its keenness to support the needy under various circumstances.

He said the Royal Humanitarian Foundation has also prepared a book for instilling the culture of giving in young minds. The book, he said, will be included in the school curriculum in Bahrain, the UAE, Jordan and Egypt. “Secondary students would start learning from it shortly,” Dr Al Sayed said.
