Bahrain is fully committed to supporting the international community in all its efforts to defeat the terrorist Daesh group. This was emphasised by Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani as he took part yesterday in the inaugural session of the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/ISIS ministerial meeting which was held in Rome.
The meeting was co-chaired by the US Secretary of State and the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and with the participation of a number of Foreign Ministers from the coalition member states. Dr Al Zayani delivered a speech in which he hailed holding the ministerial meeting, describing it as an opportunity to review the progress made by the coalition member states across the globe.
He hailed the updates and briefings on the efforts exerted to defeat Daesh, stressing the Kingdom’s active participation in all efforts to defeat this terrorist organisation.
The Minister noted that the meeting is also an opportunity to highlight the potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the countries’ efforts, not only in how the past 18 months have influenced terrorist groups with ideas on biological weapons and exploiting the vulnerability in our international systems, but also in how the economic and social consequences can fuel desperation that extremists could take advantage of while looking for new recruits to join the organisation.
The Foreign Minister called for caution against new forms of terrorist attacks, biological attacks, drones, and other high-tech and low-cost threats, and to move to defeat both state and non-state sponsors of terrorism. He further stressed the importance of breaking this loop of despair and working to move towards positivity, peace and prosperity.
He underlined that the Kingdom of Bahrain would be at the forefront of such a process just as it has been in defeating Daesh. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, also participated in the meeting along with Bahrain Ambassador to Italy Dr Nasser Mohammed Al Balushi and the Chief of Strategic Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Nancy Abdulla Jamal.
