When it comes to battling the COVID-19 pandemic, Bahrain is determined not to leave anyone behind. It doesn’t matter, even if some of the citizens are living abroad.

Starting this Monday, the Kingdom is expanding its massive COVID-19 vaccination drive to include citizens staying abroad through its embassies worldwide.

For a start, Bahraini citizens in the United Kingdom will begin getting their jabs. According to the Embassy of Bahrain to the United Kingdom, the vaccination drive begins on Monday, July 5, and continues until Friday, July 9. In preparation, the Embassy had sent notifications to Bahraini citizens in the UK to get their names registered.

A statement carried by AlAyam, quoting Bahrain Embassy in the UK, confirms that officials will contact those registered to fix their date and time of vaccination. The latest move follows a decision by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to vaccinate all Bahraini citizens at home and abroad to harden the battle against the outbreak. No word, however, is available on the types of vaccines offered abroad.

According to the health alert website, in Bahrain, four vaccines are listed for citizens and residents to register - AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Sinopharm and Sputnik. According to ourworldindata.org, more than 60% of the total population in the Kingdom has received at least one vaccine dose.

To bring it into perspective, know that 23.8% of the world population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. 3.16 billion doses are given globally, and 38.69 million doses are given each day. Only 1% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose.

Recently, Bahrain has also rolled out a COVID-19 alert mechanism modelled on the traffic lights system where green, yellow, orange and red lights indicate subsequent levels of increasing curbs and positivity rates. The National Medical Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus had said that the thresholds set for each alert level were subject to change according to data and developments. Accordingly, green light blinks if cases are below 2% for 14 days, yellow for 2-5% for seven days, Orange for 5 to 8% for four days and Red if cases above 8% for 3 days.
