More than BD 1 million disbursed to release people defaulted on payments

A total of 271 people in Bahrain who landed in jail for failing to pay their debts, had their reprieve with the help of Zakat and Charity Fund at the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments. The fund disbursed a total of BD1,030,000 to release people who defaulted on their payments this year as part of the Debtors project.
Judge Issa Al-Mannai, the Undersecretary of Justice and Islamic Affairs, said the project, now in its fifth year, was launched this year in February and received tremendous response from the supporters of Zakat and Charity Fund. Kuwait Finance House, Al Mannai said, contributed one and a half million dinars to the total amount collected this year, which exceeds one million and seven hundred thousand dinars.
The authority disbursed the amount collected in two instalments. The first went to 175 people during Ramadan, and the second to 271, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 446 in 1090 cases.
Dr Muhammad Taher Al-Qattan, the Assistant Undersecretary for Islamic Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, said the Zakat and Charity Fund is also playing a mediating role with creditors help insolvent people.
