A University of Bahrain student was selected from among thousands of applicants from around the world for a special summer training programme in the field of physics in Switzerland.
Abdullah Muhammad Al Zayed, who is from the Department of Physics at UoB’s College of Science, will join 300 students from different universities and countries as they undergo an intensive training programme at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN).
He is scheduled to start his training on 16 July for a period of up to eight weeks.
Al Zayed will be attending a series of lectures prepared by a group of scientists and researchers in the field of theoretical and experimental particle physics.
He will also be attending discussion sessions and workshops.
This will qualify him to prepare a research project under the supervision of a researcher at CERN.
The Head of the Physics Department at the College of Science at the University of Bahrain, Dr Hanan Mubarak Albuflasa, said: “The participation of a student in the most important scientific research centres in the field of elementary particle physics is a unique opportunity to create communication with international research teams, and to participate in major scientific experiments worldwide.”
Dr Albuflasa noted that the training programme will be conducted remotely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
It will not affect the progress of the training programme for students, Dr Albuflasa pointed out.
She emphasised that the participation of a student from the Physics Department at the University of Bahrain in this global scientific event is evidence of the Department’s interest in communicating with global scientific activities, especially with this prestigious international scientific centre.
Dr Albuflasa said: “This participation also comes within the strategy of the University of Bahrain in advancing the scientific level in various fields, including participation with international institutions and research centres, supported by the university’s administration and its president, Prof Dr Riyad Yousef Hamza, and the Dean of the College of Sciences, Professor Dr Muhammad Mustafa Al Helou.”
She pointed out that this training programme was coordinated and supervised by the Assistant Professor of Elementary Particle Physics, Dr Muhammad Yusuf Hussein.
Al Zayed’s participation comes within the framework of the existing scientific cooperation between the University of Bahrain and the Research Center for Elementary Particle Physics, a branch of the Shaikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, and CERN, especially after the University of Bahrain joined as an associate member.
CERN operates the world’s largest particle accelerators and provides major experiments to understand the depths of the fundamental components of matter.
More than 16,000 scientists, researchers and doctoral students work at the centre.
The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle collider.
It has a diameter of about 27 kilometres, and it is built underground at a depth of about 100 metres between France and Switzerland near Geneva.
This accelerator is used to colliding protons with a power of up to 7 Tera-electron volts (TeV).
It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and hundreds of universities and laboratories, as well as more than 100 countries.
