World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus only has good words to say about the Kingdom of Bahrain’s prominent role in the global fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Bahrain has always been one of the pioneering countries in the COVID-19 global collaborative response,” said Dr Ghebreyesus who arrived yesterday for an official two-day visit to Bahrain. Health Minister Faeqa bint Saeed Al Saleh welcomed Dr Ghebreyesus at Bahrain International Airport.

He arrived to open a new WHO regional office in Manama, which marks the Kingdom’s close cooperation with the global body throughout the pandemic and serves as the next step in the capital’s development as a leading centre of health. Upon arrival, Dr Ghebreyesus commented: “I am delighted and honoured to be in the Kingdom of Bahrain to open the WHO’s 152nd country office.

I would like to thank His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as well as the government and people of Bahrain, for their hospitality.” A press conference is scheduled for today, following the office opening, giving Dr Ghebreyesus the chance to remark on his observations of Bahrain’s vaccination success and its efforts to diminish the impact of the virus.

The WHO chief yesterday visited the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Center, King Hamad University Hospital, Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Hospital, and Al Shamil Field Center.
