Despite the lifting of the six-month shrimping ban yesterday, its quantities in the market remained scarce and prices are high. A number of vendors at the Manama Central Market said that the scarcity of supply was due to the high rise in temperature during these summer months. After the ban was lifted, the price of shrimp recorded a remarkable increase of up to 40% compared to last year.
The price of 40-kilo frozen shrimp varied between BD80 and BD110, while the price of 1 kilo was between BD2.5 and BD3.5. The annual six-month mandatory ban for catching, trading and selling shrimp in the Kingdom of Bahrain came into effect on 1 February and ended yesterday. The ban was aimed at preserving marine wealth in a way that contributes to the development of the shrimping industry.
