Corrective justice law ensures child protection: Attorney-General

The Public Prosecution has completed all preparations for implementing the Corrective Justice Law for Children and their Protection from Ill-Treatment, said Ali bin Fadhl Al-Buainain, the Attorney-General. The restorative justice law for children, he said, and respect their rights as per the best international standards.
The law stipulates raising the criminal responsibility age to 18, involving children in national rehabilitation and educational programmes, reforming their conduct and reintegrating them into their families and society.
The law also approved the special treatment of delinquent children aged between 15 and 18 while ensuring their privacy rights. The office of the Public Prosecution will be responsible for implementing and following up on the verdicts and orders issued by the Corrective Justice Court and the Childhood Judicial Committee, supporting and strengthening the aftercare system.
The Attorney-General said he had issued written instructions to all the members of the Public Prosecution on ways to deal with children when they are subjected to criminal treatment, exposed to danger or subject to ill-treatment.
Directives are also given to Appeals Prosecution to carefully review the rulings in cases when the culprit is an adult. “The aim is to ascertain that the sentence imposed is commensurate with the seriousness of the crime and to ensure maximum protection for them,” said Al-Buainain
