After suffering from a stroke that paralysed half of her body last May, a Filipino woman finally returns to the Philippines since leaving for Bahrain to work as a domestic helper in 2008. Maria, not her real name, stayed at the Philippine Embassy shelter for two months after she was discharged from the hospital.

Her condition tremendously improved through the collaborative efforts of the Filipino volunteers of the Philippine-Bahrain Caregiver Society and Al Wali Training and Development Center who provided daily care, and physical and speech therapy for the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).

A concerned individual also provided financial assistance for the daily needs and repatriation expenses of Maria. She was escorted by her co-passenger, McGyver Arasa, who volunteered to look after her for the duration of the flight from Bahrain to the Philippines. Upon their arrival in the Philippines, a medical team provided by Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) received Maria to evaluate her condition in order to arrange travel to her home province of Camiguin and be reunited with her family.

The Embassy emphasises its close cooperation with the Salmaniya Medical Complex, Ministry of Interior’s Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs, and Public Prosecutor’s Office in facilitating the successful repatriation of distressed Filipinos in Bahrain.
