Life was always a battle for Mohammed Ali Falamarzi.
But he has seldom complained about it.
Then, one day, like a dream came true, he shot to instant fame.
He made the headlines of newspapers everywhere when HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa offered him a surprise business deal he could not resist.
HH Shaikh Nasser, His Majesty the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, gave him a licence and a shop to run his business and made him a regular supplier to the LuLu hypermarket chain in Bahrain.
Shaikh Nasser also asked him if he needed a boat. All this happened while he was selling fish by the roadside in Hamad Town in 2018.
Now, fast forward to 2021. Mohammed Ali Falamarzi, the young Bahraini fisherman, still has the same charm and smile. But there is a pall of gloom on his face if you look closer.
He is now fighting a different battle, this time for his life. Doctors have diagnosed him with leukaemia.
But they assured him there is nothing to worry about and that his health is stable. Falamarzi came to know about his disease by the end of last year when he visited Jordan to perform some preliminary examinations for surgery.
However, fate had something else in store for him. He got a shock of his life when doctors told him it was not possible to operate, as he got another disease. However, they, at that time, didn’t tell him what it was but asked him to get to a hospital in Bahrain.
“Immediately, upon returning from Jordan, I went to a govern[1]ment hospital here for medical checkups.” “They confirmed that I had this malignant disease and asked me to start treatment at King Hamad University Hospital.”
“And, I am currently walking that journey.”
“But, I am fine,” Falamarzi said with a confidence-inspiring smile.
He said that his health is improving, thanks to the top care provided to him by the Bahraini doctors and staff at the hospital.
The dilemma, however, is that he is unable to continue his profession. He had not gone out to the seas for months, as doctors had prohibited him from going out of the house except for necessity.
Back in 2018, a report quoting the spokesperson of LuLu Hypermarket said that HH Shaikh Nasser had helped Mohammed Ali Falamarzi for a reason. “[The Shaikh] sees this fisherman quite often. The fisherman used to talk positively and proudly about Bahrain and was always cheerful about his job.
That’s why the Shaikh thought of doing something for him,” the spokesman told the report. Today, even as the disease takes a toll on his health, Falameriz manages to keep the same passion alive and is upbeat.
He is confident that he will overcome these tests. Yassin Zainal, the Vice-President of the Northern Municipal Council, representative of the eighth district, who visited Falameriz to enquire about his health, thanked Bahraini medical staff for their help. Zainal wished the young fisherman a speedy recovery.
