Sisters Fatima and Maryam Al Shaibani from Al Zallaq Elementary Preparatory School for Girls, have invented a device to ensure social distancing in the Kingdom of Bahrain and prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The device determines the necessary spacing distance, and emits a sound and flash to alert individuals about it.

The two innovators hope that their project will be adopted in the Kingdom and be widely circulated to benefit the citizens and residents.

The project won in the tenth Scientific Research Forum organised by the Ministry of Education as part of its scientific research programme, which includes forums and qualitative activities, to encourage students to innovate and be creative, and honour them. Maryam emphasised the school’s role in developing the students’ talent and participation in competitions in the Kingdom and abroad, believing in their high ability particularly in the field of digital programming and dealing with electronic devices.

She said the device can be used to protect children while they are outside the house. It can be placed on electricity poles and dangerous workplaces that require people to move away from the same area, as well as use it for patients with low immunity, to avoid getting infected by the coronavirus.

Fatima said: “I joined the Excellence and Talent Programme six years ago, and I benefitted from the cumulative experiences I gained. I commend the continuity of education and programmes for outstanding and talented students.

Outstanding students received support and encouragement to engage in scientific research experiments, and the school had a great role in distinguishing our project, especially the diligent follow-up of excellence and talent specialist Ghada Al Abbasi.”
