MP PROPOSES FREE WIFI ON BAHRAINI STREETS

Manama

MP Khalid Al Shaer has submitted a proposal demanding free internet service (Wi-Fi) in Bahrain’s main roads and cities.

He said the advanced countries were already providing free internet. “Internet connection is not restricted only to homes and cafes anymore. In advanced cities such as New York, London and now in Dubai, it’s available in trains, buses, cabs and main roads,” the parliamentarian said.

According to a recent research by an international firm, regular use of Wi-Fi saves around USD30 for each person, as they frequently browse the web to send e-mails, surf social networks or make calls, he said.

“Providing free Wi-Fi service in Bahrain will reduce expenses for citizens and residents. It will also enhance tourism, as visitors to the Kingdom will be able to easily access web to locate main tourism sites and will benefit from the variety of services available on the internet,” Khalid Al Shaer said.

He said Bahrain had taken major steps in improving electronic government (e-Govt) services and the Kingdom is encouraging the public to utilise them. Launching this service will add to the Kingdom’s constant development of telecommunications and information technology services, the MP said.

Other MPs, Ahmed Qarata, Jala Kadhem, Mohammed Al Jowder and Isa Al Kooheji have also backed the proposal.
