The 30th Bahrain International Music Festival kicked off yesterday evening with a captivating performance by Lebanese singer Jahidah Wehbe at Bahrain National Theatre that brought to life evergreen songs of famous artists from the Arab world and beyond.
The event began with Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, wishing Bahrain a melodious season full of fun and joy. Music, she said, builds bridges of communication and speaks the language the whole world understands.
Despite the COVID sinking the world into deep crisis, we adhered to our culture, and from it, we made hope for a full recovery and returned our lives to normality,” said Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa.
Today, she said, through the mellifluous voice of Jahidah, we herald the return of life to our theatre. “This season will take Bahrain on a journey through cultures and our ancient musical and lyrical heritage.”
Shaikha Mai thanked the Embassies of India, Oman and France and the works team at cultural authority for making the festival possible.
The inaugural concert “Divas” by Jahidah Wehbe took the audience on a musical journey through the works of Om Kolthoum, Edith Piaf, Asmahan, Dalida, Feirouz, Sabah, Mercedes Sossa and several other greats. Jahidah also performed original songs dedicated to Manama and Muharraq, alongside the finest musicians from Lebanon and Europe.
The festival will continue until October 16 and will flow through various cultural sites in the Kingdom from Dar Al Muharraq, Dar Bin Harban and even Dar Al Riffa. Today’s performance at the Cultural Hall will be by pianist Maxime Zecchini of France.
The concert offers a voyage through different musical styles and eras from the middle of the 18th century to the 2000s. Only those with a Green Shield on their BeAware Bahrain app will be allowed entry. The festival also presents several music-related workshops. To register, log on to www.culture.gov.bh.
