Bahrain’s commitment to  UN guidelines stressed
Following the admission to the United Nations in 1971, Bahrain has signed many international treaties and conventions related to peace- security and economic- social development, which underlines Bahrain’s strong desire to actively promote and uphold the standards and agreements of the international community, said UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann.
Addressing the gathering yesterday on the occasion of 70th anniversary of the UN, Grohmann said that the opening of first UN office in Bahrain in 1972 and the signing of the UNDP basic agreement in 1978 marked the beginning of a successful development cooperation between the UN and Bahrain.
Over the years more UN agencies were opened in Bahrain and the partnership between both brought positive results. Since the inception of Enterprise Development and Investment Programme in Bahrain, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has assisted 5000 prospective Bahraini entrepreneurs leading to the creation of 800 new enterprises and nearly 15,000 jobs.
The UN Resident Coordinator said that over the years, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has helped to create the University of Bahrain, to formulate the National Environment Strategy, the National Strategy for People living with Disabilities and the National Youth Strategy.
On the environmental front, Bahrain has supported UNEP and facilitated its mandate to promote sustainable development in general and protection of the environment in the West Asia region for over 30 years.
UNESCO has also been instrumental in supporting the Kingdom’s aspirations in preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage. Today, Bahrain boasts off two sites on the World Heritage List- Qalat Al Bahrain and Pearling- Grohmann said.
Undersecretary for International Affairs, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said that Bahrain has every intention of working with the UNDP as part of the Kingdom’s ongoing partnership since 1978 to attain the Sustainable Development Goals through national programmes and initiatives in consonance with Bahrain’s 2030 Economic Vision and its supportive national government programme.
A UN-Bahrain documentary trailer, which focuses on the history of Bahrain’s engagement with the UN, was screened on the occasion. UN70 photo exhibition, which showcases key moments from Bahrain’s participation at the UN, was inaugurated during the function.
Minister of Health Faeqa bint Saeed Al Saleh, prominent officials and ambassadors from various countries attended the event.
