Works Ministry completes strategic Shaikh Zayed Road development project

The development work at Shaikh Zayed Road, which is one of the most strategic projects on the main road network in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has been completed.

The Shaikh Zayed Road represents the main artery for traffic from the villages of Aali, Salmabad and Madinat Zayed towards Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Street to Manama and vice versa and Bahrain National Stadium, as well as serves the housing of Horat Aali.

The Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Engineer Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf, said that the project will improve the road network in the Kingdom.

It will increase the capacity of Shaikh Zayed Road and enhance traffic safety, in addition to improving the flow of traffic and efficiency of a major artery in the road network.

He noted that the road capacity before the expansion was 7,000 vehicles per hour during peak hours.

Now after the completion of the project, it will reach 11,000 vehicles per hour.

The project included the development of the aforementioned street and its expansion from two to three lanes in each direction with a length of 3.2 kilometres and extending from Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Street in the west to the Driving Training School in the east, and the roundabouts were converted into traffic lights.

The development of 16 December Street includes the construction of a rainwater drainage network and the enhancement of traffic safety through the installation of concrete barriers and suspended traffic lights.

It also included the construction of the main sewage line with a length of 1.7 km, which starts from the Ramli housing project and extends to Shaikh Isa bin Salman Street.

It included the construction of a sewage lifting station with a depth of about 10 metres, a rainwater drainage network, new lighting, concrete barriers to separate lanes, installation of traffic signs and painting of ground lines to enhance traffic safety.

The project was awarded by the Tender and Auction Board to the Western Baynounah Group with a total project value of BD23,400,000 and financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.

The Minister praised the cooperation of citizens and residents and their commitment to traffic signals and diversions to preserve their safety, appreciating their understanding of any inconvenience during the project implementation period.
