The Muharraq Municipal Council presented in its session yesterday a proposal to re-divide Muharraq Governorate into 10 municipal electoral districts.
It is “in response to urban and housing expansion, especially in Hidd and Qalali,” according to the proposal.
The head of the Muharraq Municipal Council, Ghazi Al Morbati, said in his intervention: “The city of Hidd has 30 complexes between residential and service areas, industrial areas and others.
It is ready to divide from one to two districts, in addition to the Galali area, which has witnessed a great urban expansion through the establishment of development projects such as real estate, creeping artificial islands, and increasing commercial investment activities.”
Al Morbati pointed to the increase in the population of citizens and residents to live in these new areas within the fifth and eighth electoral districts in Muharraq, as it is one of the most attractive cities for housing projects in the Kingdom.
He said that all these justifications push the council to a system of 10 electoral districts instead of what is currently in place, meaning an increase in council members from 8 to 10 districts.
Despite the great responsibilities that fall on the municipal council, it bears responsibility, and the best example of this is the city of Sharq that accommodates thousands of citizens, which in itself constitutes an electoral district.
He continued: “This is in addition to what we have mentioned in other areas and the very large urban expansion that Muharraq has enjoyed, and the backfill operations that have not stopped for decades, and have contributed to a very large increase in areas and lands until the map of this historic city has changed very noticeably towards expansion.”
Council Chairman Ghazi Al Morbati praised the government’s tendency to push investment, encourage and facilitate the private sector to be an essential partner in the development of Muharraq
