If Hussain Abdullah Al-Olaywat had not taken the initiative, Bahrain would have lost a priceless piece of its history. Such was the state of the 300-year-old artefact when Al-Olaywat from Barbar stumbled upon it, an Islamic tombstone.
Knowing the historical and cultural significance of the find, Al-Olaywat decided to protect the stone from permanent ruin. So, he took the initiative to move it to his own home without waiting for authorities to take over.
He, however, never wanted to put such an element of historical importance tucked away unnoticed at some corner of his house. Al-Olaywat then approached the Bahrain National Museum to find a proper place for preserving and displaying it, and it worked.
Now, the tombstone is of interest to many, including archaeologists and historians visiting the Bahrain National Museum, thanks to Al-Olaywat.
Shaikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Director-General of Culture and Arts at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, said Al-Olaywat’s effort shows the patriotic sense and deep interest in preserving the heritage of the dear Kingdom of Bahrain.
She said this during a meeting with Al-Olaywat with Dr Salman Al-Mahari, the Director of Antiquities and Museums. Sheikha Hala thanked Al-Olaywat on behalf of the Bah[1]rain Authority for Culture and Antiquities for his efforts.
