Bahrain will join the world in celebrating the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, observed worldwide each December 5.

The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985 for the aim of heightening awareness of the important contribution of volunteer service, and stimulating more people in all walks of life to offer their services as volunteers, both at home and abroad.

On the occasion, Labour and Social Development Minister, Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, asserted that Bahrain boasts a rich record of voluntary work, whose programmes emanate from the needs of society, noting that the unprecedented voluntary campaigns launched over the past two years to confront the novel Coronavirus pandemic are a living proof of the keenness of Bahrainis to support the official entities whenever need arises to answer the call of duty and volunteer for the sake of the nation.

Humaidan pointed out that the annual event provides an opportunity to pay tribute to all voluntary, social and charity workers in order to shed light on their achievements and encourage them to continue their dedication and giving march.

It is also an opportunity to instill the love of voluntary and social work in the minds of youngsters, being an authentic humanitarian and social value established by the Islamic religion, and is deeply rooted in the history of the Bahraini people, he said.

He indicated that Bahrain enjoys an integrated professional voluntary work system as a result of HM the King’s Reform Projects, noting that there are as many as 632 NGOs supervised by the Labour and Social Development Ministry, which reflects Bahrain’s leadership in supporting voluntary work and facilitating its procedures to ensure the achievement of its humanitarian, charitable and social goals.
