Bahrain to play in international handball friendly tournament

Bahrain’s senior men’s national handball team will be playing in an international friendly tournament in Saudi Arabia in preparation for their campaign next month in the 2022 Asian Men’s Handball Championship.

The exhibition competition, set to be held in the Eastern Province, is scheduled to begin tomorrow and will continue until Tuesday next week.

Also taking part are African giants Egypt and Morocco, along with hosts Saudi.

Bahrain’s national team are scheduled to depart for Saudi today.

They play their first game tomorrow against Egypt, before facing off with Saudi on Sunday.

The nationals then take on Morocco in their final fixture.

The Bahrainis have been training locally with a 19-player squad under head coach Aron Kristjansson.

The team includes Hussain Al Sayyad, Mohammed Abdulhussain, Mohammed Mirza, Ali Mirza, Hassan Samaheeji, Mohammed Habib, Mahdi Saad, Mohammed Abdulredha, Ali Abdulqader, Ali Eid, Hassan Madan, Mohammed Al Maqabi, Bilal Basham, Qassim Qamber, Ahmed Jalal, Mohammed Nasser, Hussain Mahfoodh, Hassan Mirza and Hisham Ahmed.

The Bahrainis are in Group D for the first round of the Asian championship alongside Japan, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

A total of 17 national teams are taking part in the event, which also acts as a continental qualifying competition for the world championships in 2023.

In the previous Asian championship held in January of 2020, the Bahrainis finished fourth overall.

Bahrain has never won the title but was runners-up four times in the last six editions and bronze-medallists once.
