Bahrain is supporting global efforts to help Afghanistan achieve peace, security and stability, as well as progress and development in its territories.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani participated in the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Afghanistan, which was held in Islamabad yesterday, under the patronage and in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and President of the Islamic Summit, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Dr Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and OIC Secretary-General Hussain Ibrahim Taha participated in the meeting.

Also attending the meeting were representatives of the US, the UK, Russia, the European Union, France, Japan and the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The meeting issued a resolution affirming the commitment of the OIC member states to preserving the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Afghanistan to achieve peace, security, stability and development in its territories.

The resolution called upon all countries, the UN system and international organisations, including international financial institutions, to continue providing all possible and necessary assistance for recovery, reconstruction, development and financial assistance to Afghanistan.

It also stressed the importance of combating terrorism in Afghanistan.

The meeting also issued a resolution on Palestine and the Holy City of Jerusalem, in which it affirmed the importance of the Palestinian issue to the member states of the OIC, condemned the illegal measures taken by Israel to change the legal status and character of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and called on the member states and the international community, including the UN Security Council, to bear their responsibilities in this regard.

The resolution emphasised that the key to any real peace solution starts with the city of Jerusalem and preserving its historical status, to enable the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights, foremost of which is their right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
