Children enjoyed their pleasant New Year gift all around Bahrain to the fullest, with many of them venturing out into the open streets to splash and soak themselves in the soothing showers.
Traffic authorities issued a warning to road users to remain cautious to ensure safety.
Reports said that many areas usually prone to floods were unaffected this time, thanks to newly constructed drains which allowed water to flow out.
The rain emergency team at the Ministry of Works were out in full working mode to siphon out rainwater collected in low-lying areas.
“Emergency teams are in all four governorates of Bahrain and monitoring the situation closely,” said the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.
The statement also said that Works Minister Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf is in touch with the emergency response teams and is taking necessary actions.
The Undersecretary of Works in the Ministry, Ahmed AlKhayyat, said, “The ministry has deployed necessary rainwater suction vehicles at all affected areas, especially at main streets and streets surrounding schools, hospitals, mosques, institutions, within cities and villages.”
“We are monitoring rainwater clogged areas and are coordinating with the emergency teams in all governorates.”
“The officials are following up on all communications received from citizens without delay to avoid rainwater damages.”
“Measures are taken to suck out any water that may accumulate and disrupt traffic.”
Al-Khayyat called on citizens to remain careful and report rainwater gathering on ministry numbers.
He also called on citizens not to open sewage covers to preserve the integrity of sewage networks.
The Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, said that the four municipalities started rainwater suction works and set up communication lines to receive calls from citizens.
He said, “We divided the work in the municipalities into four teams, and with Director-Generals leading emergency work teams.
“There is also a group in this team specialized in collecting information and making the necessary contacts with the work team,” he added.
He said, “We received large numbers of reports from the Capital and three municipalities.”
The focus now is clearing internal streets in neighbourhoods and villages to facilitate traffic by suctioning rainwater pools.”
He continued, “We have several suction tanks distributed over the four municipalities, and we are capable of increasing their numbers when needed.”
“We also have a database to detect water collection areas, and teams and inspectors in all municipalities to inspect the areas and set priorities according to the action plan,” he added.
