Heavy overnight and early morning downpours cause flooding in many parts of Bahrain

Bahrain woke up with many residential areas inaccessible following heavy overnight rains for several hours on Saturday night and early yesterday morning.

As heavy showers continued, some houses were left flooded and furniture were seen floating.

Fortunately, no loss of life or major damage to properties was reported.

With many areas already waterlogged by the continuous rains since Friday afternoon, pouring rain throughout the day yesterday had resulted in more flash flooding across several roadways and low-lying areas in the Kingdom, leading to traffic chaos on major thoroughfares and causing hardship for commuters.

Due to the high waters, people struggled to come out of their homes in some parts.

Several roads had water flowing over them, with a lot of standing water seen in other streets as well.

The Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning workers pumped out water from the waterlogged areas, while some residents removed water from their own houses and premises.

Images, including those posted by netizens on social media, show the effects of the thunderstorms, flooding neighbourhoods and causing trouble to motorists and residents.

Although vehicle movement was badly affected, flights at the Bahrain International Airport were unaffected.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to remain in place in the coming days, meaning that there are more chances for severe weather, strong surface winds, and heavy rainfall, according to the Bahrain Meteorological Directorate.

Motorists have been urged to remain cautious, as well as fishermen against rough sea conditions.

The Works Ministry’s cleanup efforts are underway.
