Citizens and residents were taken aback after the prices of cucumber – one of their favourite vegetables – hit the roof at the Bahrain Central Market.

The price of a filling (one carton) increased from BD2.5 to BD8 on Monday before cooling down to BD5.5 yesterday.

Speaking to The Daily Tribune, Ashkar Poozhithala, a vegetable and fruit trader at the Central Market, said the price rise could be attributed to lack of supplies, especially from Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The prices of many other fruits and vegetables also saw an increase owing to lack of supplies this week. Homemaker Vidhu Vinod Kumar said the price rise came as a shock. “This price rise is unbelievable. Now I have to plan as to how to prepare salads without cucumbers,” she said.

This follows the increase in prices of Saudi dairy products including milk and yogurt. Bahraini dairy products major Awal Dairy Company has already announced that it will increase products in the local market.
