The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism attributed the recent hike in prices of vegetables to lack of production, unfavourable weather conditions and shipping constraints.
Imports of cucumber and other vegetables will resume soon, the ministry said, adding that it is taking corrective measures to ensure reasonable prices for all consumers.
The ministry said it is aware of the high market prices for cucumber, peppers and other vegetables. “This mainly is due to lack of production owing to negative weather conditions in the exporting countries and partly due to logistic issues related to shipping,” the ministry said.
“We are taking necessary measures to achieve a more balanced supply and demand in the local market through consultation with traders,” the ministry added.
“Scarcity of these products is temporary, and their supply will resume during the coming period at reasonable rates, the statement added.
