A government employee will now spend seven years behind bars for being found guilty in a corruption case that went on trial before the High Criminal Court.

Another Bahraini man, a clearance agent, also received similar jail terms for assisting the employee at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to attract customers.

Police exposed the employee’s hand in the crime during an investigation into a trader charged with selling counterfeit goods.

The trader told investigators that a clearing agent claimed that he could remove his violation with the help of a MOICT employee for an unspecified amount.

Police said they found evidence supporting the crime from the phones of both the clearing agent and the MOICT employee.

Investigators also revealed finding solid evidence for the man taking bribes.

The Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Chief Prosecutor had said the investigation followed a tip-off from the Anti-Corruption Department of the Public Prosecution.

The Public Prosecution heard witness testimonies and examined text messages between the pair.

Several business owners told the prosecution that the suspect took money from them for removing violations.
