Cool showers drench several parts of Bahrain

Bahrain yesterday experienced mild to moderate showers in several parts of the Kingdom, which the Meteorology Department had warned would become thundery with gusts of up to 35kt today.
The Meteorology Department at the Ministry of Transportation and Communications had predicted the sky to remain cloudy today also with chances of rain that would remain thundery at times.
A warning issued by the Meteorology Department says, “Thundery showers are expected to affect the Kingdom at times with strong gusts causing rough seas. Please be careful.”

Several people also managed to post videos and pictures of the shower on twitter celebrating the opportunity.
“Happy rain Bahrain”, wrote @Muhammadsandhun with a picture shot from the window of a vehicle.
People also uploaded videos showing alleys soaked with rainwater.
Emergency teams deployed
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning said rain emergency teams are deployed in various governorates to deal with rainwater gathering issues quickly.
Essam Khalaf, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, was in direct touch with the works teams to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent disruption.
The ministry said it has monitored rainwater collection sites, provided pumps and distributed tanks in advance.
“We had re-cleaned 1,288 drainage holes as well as open channels to maintain the flow of water.”
The ministry said it has collected information on water collection points in different governorates and updated it to the database.
“Rainwater suction tanks and mobile pumps were deployed in all areas monitored.”
The General Directorate of Civil Defence and General Directorate of Traffic, police directorates and emergency police dealt with more than 479 reports of rain-related incidents.
The Operations Department activated the emergency plan in coordination with security authorities and took field measures to manage traffic.
Civil Defence officials dealt with four reports of electric short-circuits and falling of lighting poles.
The operations department processed 315 reports of traffic light disruptions and cars stuck in rainwater.
The General Traffic Department recorded 160 reports of vehicle breakdowns and minor accidents.
Broken signals were manually controlled by traffic police until they were all fixed.
Police units also patrolled areas with excess rainwater collection issues.
No major adverse incidents or injuries were reported.
The General Directorate of Traffic called upon drivers to remain cautious amid the rain by leaving a safe distance between vehicles and focusing on the road.
The Meteorology Department has also predicted rain in Bahrain for the next two days on Monday and Tuesday.
