Parliamentarians urge to save local meat traders
Parliamentarians will vote in the coming weekly meeting on Tuesday, on an urgent proposal to help local meat traders, who are bearing great losses after the meat subsidy removal decision was implemented on October 1.
The proposal was submitted by MP Adel Binhameed to enhance the living standards of Bahraini meat sellers, “who have been massively harmed by the meat subsidy removal decision imposed by the Government.”
“Many people are boycotting red meat because of its high price following the subsidy removal. This has badly affected the Bahraini butchers, as selling meat is their only source of income,” Binhameed stated.
He said, “If the public continues to boycott red meat in the next few weeks, local butchers would have to be categorised as unemployed.”
Four more MPs have now joined Binhameed in submitting the urgent proposal, as “Bahraini butchers continue to suffer from the aftermath of the subsidy removal decision.”
“The government is responsible for providing citizens with a decent living, and as long as it proceeds with the meat subsidy removal decision, it should bear the consequences of this decision and protect this segment of citizens,” Binhameed added, demanding the government to immediately conduct a study on the situations of Bahraini meat traders and provide them with the necessary support.
