Bahrain joins International Day of Education global celebration with vow to further reduce illiteracy among youth

Bahrain is in the process of working on digital literacy, which has become one of the Kingdom’s primary sustainable development goals.

Education Minister Dr Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi has announced the construction plan that includes the establishment of 18 new schools and 24 academic buildings in various governorates, to raise the capacity of schools at various educational levels.

This came as Bahrain yesterday joined the global celebration of the International Day of Education.

The event is held every year on January 24.

The minister referred to the ministry’s efforts that resulted in reducing the illiteracy rate to less than 2.4%, according to the annual report issued by UNESCO under the title (Education for All).

This was achieved by providing several evening education centres for men and women, distributed in different governorates.

Dr Al Nuaimi also expressed his pride in providing appropriate education to students with special needs such as simple mental disabilities, Down Syndrome, autism, the blind and the deaf, learning difficulties, with all the support devices that help them keep up with the study of their ordinary peers.

He said that the educational sector’s achievements were due to the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the follow up of Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Supreme Council for the Development of Education and Training, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.

Distance learning Dr Al Nuaimi pointed out the ministry’s success in ensuring the sustainability of distance learning despite the pandemic.

It takes into consideration the National Medical Team for Combatting the Coronavirus’ directives by providing educational online content, activities, applications through the educational portal.

It has reached more than 33 million visits and all levels’ lessons through 14 YouTube channels, including a channel dedicated to people with special needs, in addition to providing lessons through television in cooperation with the Ministry of Information Affairs.

Teachers are technically prepared to face the challenges of online teaching The ministry has provided appropriate education to children Filipino groups to hold fishing competition TDT | Manama Pinoy Anglers Bahrain, a Filipino community organisation for fishing enthusiasts recognised by the Philippine Embassy, invites everyone to the 9th Linis Muna Bago Itcha Clean-Up Drive and Save our Seas activity.

It will be held on Friday, 11 February, from 6 am to 3 pm at Nurana Island.

For those who wish to take part in the event, register on or before the date of the competition.

Gifts and other prizes are at stake for the participants.

Interested participants may directly coordinate with Pinoy Anglers’ Officers for the registration.

In November last year, the group also held a successful fishing competition at Nurana Island.

It was part of a fun-filled beach clean-up campaign called 5th “Linis Bago Itcha” that aimed at encouraging fishing enthusiasts to contribute to the protection of the environment by keeping the coastlines of the Kingdom of Bahrain clean.

The Philippine Embassy took part in the beach cleanup drive and fishing competition.

A total of 64 Filipinos joined the clean-up day and fishing event.

Fernando Hernandez took the heaviest catch, a kingfish weighing 6.2 kgs, to capture the title.

Ruel Pinto came second with a 4.9 kgs catch and Jhun Rodriguez third with 4.5 kgs catch.
