The fourth High Criminal Court awarded a public servant seven years in jail and a fine of BD1,408 for embezzlement and tampering with electronic data of Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs.
The court ordered the accused to refund the BD1,408 taken from NPRA and acquitted the second suspect of all the charges.
The Public Prosecution said they are studying the verdict and reasons for the acquittal of the second suspect in preparation for appealing.
Their arrests stem from the alleged embezzlements of funds belonging to the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs.
NPRA has collected the money for renewing residency permits. An investigation by the Public Prosecution found that the suspects conducted 23 transactions to transfer BD1,472 dinars collected as fees for renewing residency permits without recording them in NPRA systems.
