The Ministry of Health reported three more COVID-19 deaths on Sunday night, taking the number of deceased in Bahrain to 1,407.

The virus has claimed the lives of 13 people since the beginning of New Year. There were 12 critical cases and 6,745 new cases on Sunday, while the number of active cases stood at 42,613.

The fatalities were on the decline towards the end of last year with last December recording zero deaths. No major clusters were reported for the last one month.

During the beginning of New Year, a few superspreader cases were reported. Contact tracing of a symptomatic 31-year-old female citizen revealed 12 positive cases across five different households.

The cases detected are family related and include the index case’s parents, siblings, nephew, cousins and domestic helper, all of whom had direct contact with each other during a gathering.

Among others, contact tracing of a symptomatic 30-yearold female citizen and her 17-year-old sister revealed nine positive cases across three different households.

The cases detected are family related and include the first index case’s son, the sisters’ parents, brothers, sister-in-law and nephews, all of whom had direct contact with each other during a family gathering.

In another incident, contact tracing of a symptomatic 75-year-old male citizen revealed eight family-related positive cases across three different households. The cases detected include the index case’s wife, daughters and grandchildren, all of whom had direct contact with each other during a family gathering.

The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) has approved the emergency use of the oral COVID-19 antiviral, Paxlovid. The medication has been authorised for individuals 18 years old and above who suffer from mild to moderate symptoms.
