In a tragic incident, a Bahrain resident died on Saturday after falling from a running train while on the way home from the airport.
According to sources, Bahrain resident Abdul Hameed had landed at Calicut International Airport located in the Southern Indian State of Kerala before boarding a train to his hometown Kannur.
The accident is believed to have occurred after two hours of boarding the train and the body of the deceased was found trapped in a fishing net set by the local fishermen in a river that flows beneath the rail bridge, the sources added. It is learnt that Abdul Hameed has been managing his own business in Bahrain.
He was a long-time resident in Saudi Arabia and had only come to Bahrain two years ago.
Local police have begun a probe into the incident, the sources said.
Local media quoted Abdul Hameed’s brother who said the initial probe by police signals at an accident.
“My brother must have fallen from the train to the river,” he said.
Travelling by standing at the open doorway of a running train is a common practice across India though authorities frequently warn against engaging in the act.
According to a recent Indian Supreme Court verdict, Indian Railways is liable for a passenger who hurts or kills himself in a fall from a speeding train while he or she was standing at the open door of a compartment.
