Barbar, which had lost its serenity to illegal dumping of construction and other waste, has started regaining its lost glory. Thanks to the efforts of the Works ministry and Urbaser Company, the coastlines of Barbar now sport a cleaner look.
Before yesterday, this was not the case. The coastline was a sad sight dotted with large piles of construction and other solid wastes. All of that is gone now.
Dr Sayed Shubr Ibrahim Al-Wadaei, a Northern Municipal council member and representative of the first district, says they have removed 13 truckloads of debris, including construction waste materials, to the landfill in Askar. The challenge, however, is to keep the place clean.
Al Wadaei said people are dumping waste along the coastline in violation of the Public Hygiene act.
“To tackle such acts, legal and control measures are in place as well as a tracking and monitoring system for residents near the site,” he said.
Authority will also ensure administrative measures to bring back the coastline to its previous glory.
“Violators will also attract legal actions and penalties,” he warned, calling on people to cooperate in protecting the coast and track violators.
The efforts are part of a project for renovating the Barbar coast under the slogan ‘Sustainability of Coasts is our National Responsibility’.
