A Canadian basketball professional playing with one of Bahrain’s top clubs was found dead at his Juffair apartment yesterday, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.
Kenny Ejim, born in Brampton, Ontario in Canada, in 1994, has been playing in the Kingdom this season with Al Najma Club.
The club confirmed his passing yesterday, posting an image of Ejim on social media with a message “Rest in Peace”.
Some team members and fellow players also posted tributes to Ejim on their accounts. Ejim had just played in a national league game with Najma on Friday last week.
According to multiple sources, the team was given a day off on Sunday, but then Ejim was missing from practice on Monday night without informing the club of his absence.
Teammates attempted to contact him but got no reply.
Ejim’s fellow professional on Najma decided to go to his home yesterday morning to check on him. The teammate, who reportedly lives in the same building, did not receive a response upon reaching Ejim’s apartment and decided to break the door down.
This is when Ejim’s body was found, the sources said.
An investigation is underway by the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the player’s death.
