The Lower Criminal Court sentenced a man to six months behind bars after he was found guilty of tax evasion and importing banned goods.

The confiscated items were also ordered to be confiscated from him.

He was also fined BD1,245 which is equivalent to the value of the seized items. Two other men were involved in the case but were acquitted for lack of evidence against them.

Smuggling

The man, a GCC national, was arrested at King Fahad Causeway after attempting to smuggle a large number of banned tobacco items.

He reportedly concealed them in hidden places in his car.

Investigations uncovered that the defendant was abetted by two accomplices; an Arab man and an Asian man, both of whom were acquitted.

They reportedly tasked him to smuggle the items and agreed with him to meet him in Bahrain to receive them.

The duo was arrested following a warrant issued by the Public Prosecution which stated in a statement that they are studying the reasons why they were acquitted ahead of appealing their sentences.
