More than 31,000 Bahrainis received unemployment benefits in 2021: Labour Minister

Unemployment insurance by the government benefitted 31,099 Bahrainis in 2021, said Jameel Humaidan, the Labour and Social Development Minister.

The minister also confirmed that the government continues unemployment benefits for citizens who meet the eligibility criteria under the unemployment law.

Statistics show that 23,193 people received unemployment benefits in 2020 and 17,669 in 2019.

The minister said that financial support to sectors affected by the pandemic contributed to job stability in 12 sectors.

Looking ahead, Humaidan said the ministry expects growth in the coming period, thanks to the economic recovery plan, waning pandemic and strengthening economic activity.

The ministry, he said, will invest more to attract more jobs and create more opportunities for citizens.

A new clause was added to the Unemployment Insurance Law to disburse financial support to sectors affected by the pandemic, as controls were established stipulating entitlement to financial support to pay the wages of Bahraini workers in these facilities, which contributed to their protection and job stability in 12 sectors,” the minister said.
