Manama Municipality revamp in bid for Unesco heritage list

The historic building of the Manama Municipality is to be revamped as part of a bid to feature on the Unesco List of World Heritage Sites. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning will partner to renovate the iconic building.

The drive is part of continued cooperation to upgrade Bahrain’s cultural infrastructure countrywide and promote historic towns, specially Manama and Muharraq.

The authority will develop the restoration work of the building in accordance with the original urban features and commission a specialized engineering team and designers in coordination with the ministry.

BACA President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa stressed the importance of the project as Bahrain gears up to celebrate more than 100 years of municipal work.

Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf stressed fruitful joint cooperation to enhance the urban features of towns in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Builts in 1919, the historic building went down in history as the first municipality in the Arabian Gulf and the third in the Arab region.
