CCTV footage of thief in ‘Abaya’ released

A thief who robbed jewellery worth BD3,200 from a shop in Gold Souq, disguising himself in woman’s clothing, is now serving a two-year jail term.

The Interior Ministry has released security footage and details of the robbery committed by the man, dressed in Abaya.

The thief recently went to a shop in Gold Souq in the guise of a customer and asked for a gold necklace. After he received it, he ran from the shop while the shopkeeper followed. The shopkeeper gave up as he could not keep pace with the thief.

Officers then launched an investigation to catch the robber.

“We received a call from  the operations room reporting a theft in a jewellery shop in Manama. We deployed patrols to the location shortly after receiving the report. Upon arrival, we were told that a woman wearing an Abaya and covering her face stole jewellery worth BD3,200. While questioning the owner, he told us that the suspect was a male. The owner suspected this from the thief’s quick escape from the shop. We opened an investigation and police were deployed in the area. A citizen called to inform that he suspected an Asian worker from the area. We headed to the individual’s location and found that the suspect was very tense when we asked him why he was in the area. We arrested him and took him to the police station. He confessed to stealing the necklace and said he had hidden it in an area close to the jewellery shop,” the Interior Ministry’s Al Amn programme said, quoting a senior police officer.
