An Asian man stands accused before the First High Criminal Court in Bahrain for human trafficking.

The Public Prosecution has charged the suspect with trafficking two girls, Asian nationals, and holding them in captivity for prostitution.

The court postponed the case to March 29 for passing a verdict. The suspect’s lawyer rejected the claims made against him and said that he had only kept the victim’s passport as a guarantee against the money they owed him for their visa and air ticket.

The victims, the court heard, were forced into prostitution with life threats. The suspect also had an accomplice in the crime. The head of the Trafficking in Persons Prosecution said they had completed the investigation into the case.

The victim’s ordeal came to light when one of the girls managed to make a phone call from the apartments where they were locked up. Police traced the phone to the apartment and freed the victims, who reportedly had come to the Kingdom on job visas.
