The High Criminal Court has sentenced a Pakistani man to life in prison after he was arrested for carrying 44 capsules that contain heroin in his guts.
The defendant, 23, was held at the Bahrain International Airport after a tip-off received by the competent authorities.
The Bahraini anti-drug officials were already alerted of the defendant’s plans, but his luggage was clean when he was initially searched.
However, it was later discovered that the drugs were stored in his guts. He allegedly received an amount of money to smuggle the capsules by swallowing them.
He told prosecutors that he had drunk a banana juice to help him swallow the capsules. “I used a tape that was attached to the capsules. I initially swallowed 23 capsules. Then I downed 14 capsules, following which five capsules in space of two days,” the defendant told prosecutors.
The total weight of the capsules is 338 grams as per the court files. The defendant will be deported after serving his punishment.
