UoB student wins GITEX award

An Engineering student from University of Bahrain (UoB), Tasneem Yousif, has won BD20,000 after claiming second place in GITEX, an annual consumer computer and electronics trade show, exhibition and conference which took place in Dubai, at the Dubai World Trade Centre, recently. The competition was about the inventions and the projects for students in IT and Engineering all over the world.

“They have chosen top 10 projects shortlisted from 100 projects all over the world and my project was one of these,” she told DT News.

The top 10 projects were from India, Nigeria, Pakistan, UAE, Palestine and Bahrain.

Tasneem Yousif worked alongside aspiring engineering students Aysha Alharam, Abeer Ali and Zainab Fardan to create ‘ROBODEM’ device that can detect flammable gas.

She presented the project in front of the judges, who were from Google, Presidential affairs of UAE government, Microsoft and GITEX.

UAE - Khalifa University won the first prize and Indian Institute of Technology won the third spot.

“ROBODEM is a remote monitoring system. It is a robot that detects explosive gases using web/mobile application. It has smart tracking system that shows live tracking on the Google map. Moreover it has live video streaming using IP Camera. It gives out an alarm when there is leakage of the gas,” she explained.

The GITEX competition was held in the category of Student Lab.

It is designed to give students globally the opportunity to present innovative solutions to industry leaders on a global stage.

It’s also a great platform for the recognition of the universities in the region.
