A chronically-ill single mother is pleading for help as she requires BD4,000 more to fund her further treatment in India. Support campaigns already carried out by charity group members and media have only managed to raise BD2,000 until now while the total expenses for the treatment, which has to be done at a prominent heart hospital in India, is estimated to be in the neighbuorhood of BD6,000.
Thirty-eight years old Mariam Subair Mohammed is currently admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex after being diagnosed with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension nine months ago.
Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTPH) is a rare and progressive form of pulmonary hypertension (PH). CTEPH is caused by blood clots that don’t dissolve in the lungs. These clots cause scar-like tissue that clogs up or narrows the small blood vessels in the lungs.
“The doctors here have told me that I will have to immediately move to India for further treatment, which will cost nearly BD8,000. Though the treatment, which comprises surgical procedures, is available in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the cost will be more or less the same.”
Indian national Mariam is the mother of seven-year-old Zoya and she lives with her 63-yearold mother in Ras Ruman. “Being a single mother, I am really worried about my daughter. I have to regain my health to ensure her better future,” Mariam told The Daily Tribune.
“As of now I am on medicines that cost me around BD50 per month. If I don’t get treated soon there are high chances that I might become immobile,” she said. Mariam said she is hopeful that the Kingdom’s good people, charity organisations, women associations and officials will help her to overcome this difficult situation.
The medical condition is also making her heavier day-by-day. She was weighing over 100 kilograms when admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex nine months ago, suffering from breathlessness and partial immobility.
“I am pleading for support from the good people of this Kingdom to help me undergo further treatment in India.” According to doctors, Mariam should undergo the surgical procedures at the earliest as she may not be in a condition to travel to India later. Those willing to help, can contact Mariam on 34171726.
